Mariensäule
A beautifully preserved Baroque Marian column from 1697, standing at the edge of the Neustift vineyards in Vienna's 19th district. The column depicts the Immaculata — Mary standing on the globe with the serpent coiled at her feet — a classic Baroque iconographic scheme. Nearby, a quirky modern metal sculpture of a phylloxera aphid (the vineyard pest that devastated European wine in the 1800s) adds an unexpected historical footnote. Benches face the column, a small spring ripples gently alongside, and the surrounding vines give the spot an unusually peaceful, almost rural atmosphere. A favourite with evening walkers and couples; also marks the starting point of Neustift's famous autumn wine-hiking trail. Free and always open.
